OnX is well on its way to being the one-stop shop for all things outdoor mapping with its most recent acquisition: TroutRoutes. The company has teased the idea of wading into the water with the upcoming onX Fish. The new app will be available in Minnesota this spring and will slowly expand across the Midwest. By adding TroutRoutes to the onX family, the brand is clearly looking to expand to more waterways and fisheries.

“There’s a lot of synergy and shared values between the two companies,” said TroutRoutes founder and CEO Zach Pope. “For the past five years, TroutRoutes has been focused on meeting trout anglers’ needs by consolidating stream and river access information and developing toolsets to help anglers find and explore trout streams across the U.S.”

TroutRoutes & onX: Why This Acquisition Makes Sense

TroutRoutes is essentially already the “onX of fishing” for trout anglers. There’s so much crossover between what the two companies did that it seemed inevitable they’d merge. OnX, initially known as the go-to app for hunting maps, has grown significantly.

The company is now home to onX Hunt, onX Offroad, and onX Backcountry. With the launch of onX Fish, the company shows no sign of slowing down, nearly covering the entire spread of outdoor mapping needs.

“Zach Pope, founder of TroutRoutes, built the industry’s leading fly fishing app to solve problems for trout anglers looking for places to fish. His love for chasing trout, focus on stewardship, and commitment to solving real customer problems are the same principles that drive us at onX as well. We are excited to welcome the TroutRoutes team into the onX family and invest in their continued growth,” said onX General Manager, Hunt and Fish, Cliff Cancelosi.

TroutRoutes will be different than onX Fish. TroutRoutes offers moving water anglers with mapping more tailored to fly fishermen tossing flies to salmonid stream-runners. OnX Fish will focus more on the conventional fisherman’s needs on the big still water.

Current TroutRoute customers can expect the company to continue updating its offering and toolset. OnX Fish will launch on iOS and on the web exclusively in Minnesota this spring, with plans to expand across the Midwest later this year.
