Have a Great Weekend. | Cup of Jo

What are you up to this weekend? I’m visiting my mom in Michigan for Mother’s Day. We’re going to take walks and also give her house a fakeover, which is always satisfying. Hope you have a good one — sending a big hug to anyone who needs one — and here are a few fun links from around the web…

I wore this sexy French red lipstick the other morning and got three compliments before I even got coffee.

Who wants a bite of this three-ingredient chocolate cake?

You Hurt My Feelings, a new movie about marriage starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, looks excellent.

J.R. Moehringer talks about ghostwriting the memoirs of Andre Agassi and Prince Harry: “For the thousandth time in my ghostwriting career, I reminded myself: It’s not your effing book.” (New Yorker, via Kottke)

Looove these flattering shorts.

Why won’t people just let me not be a mom? “‘Mother’s Day is for you, too,’ one email subscriber told me a few years ago when I sent out an article I’d written about not having kids. She explained, ‘Because you are a mom. You’re a mother…to words!’ Behind this label lies the assumption that, as a woman, I am incomplete without a maternal relationship to someone or something. And this need to award honorary ‘mommy points’ is something we’re still getting wrong.” (Elle)

Hahahahaha, moms.

This memoir is one of the best I’ve ever read.

Such pretty printed swimsuits.

“Growing up, I thought being named after Connie Chung made me unique… then I met the rest of us.” (NYTimes gift link)

Wow, a colorblock kitchen!

Plus, three reader comments:

Says Claire on what ‘glimmers’ have you seen recently: “I went to a Sound of Music sing-a-long a few months ago, and oh, man, you have not known hilarity until you hear 150 people all audibly hesitating just before the high notes in ‘Climb Every Mountain’ and then laughing realizing we’d all had the same thought. We tried the high notes anyway. It was the funniest, most horrible sound I’ve ever heard, and I loved it.”

Says Courtney on what ‘glimmers’ have you seen recently: “The neighbors’ peonies are blooming! The best little sniff on the way to the bus stop. Also, when I told my four-year-old that he could eat ice cream in the bath last night, he said, ‘Well, that could be a little fun.’”

Says Tara on what’s your relationship status: “I’m a single mom by choice, now dating as my son just turned one. The best part of dating is the 20 minutes before you go, the anticipation. The dread. The looking at their profile RIGHT before you walk in. What was their name again? Oh, okay, Mark, and he likes to surf. I’ve made out with more strangers in in my 30s than ever before. I’ve also cried a lot because they didn’t text. It’s a mind f*ck but it’s the most raw and bare-bones human thing to do. I’m dating someone new, it’s very FRESH. He bought my son blueberries because I talked about how much he loves them. He went to camp with my first boyfriend who is the sweetest guy. I just feel like that’s a good omen. He’s really into healthy food, aggressively. Kimchi f*cking everywhere. I’m starting to like kimchi though.”
